Checking a guard or a security company in Nebraska
This page is for whoever is doing the checking — a client, a property manager, a company vetting a subcontractor. It tells you what a guard and a guard company are supposed to hold in Nebraska, and walks you to the regulator’s own records to confirm it.
tessura is not a Nebraska agency and issues nothing. Every link below goes to the regulator, and the regulator’s answer is the one that counts.

Check the guard
Nebraska has no statewide guard licence, so what a guard needs depends on the city or county.
How to check it
- Know that Nebraska issues no state guard licence, so "state licensed" is not a claim that can be true of an individual guard here.
- Watch for the specific false positive: a firm can accurately say it holds "a Nebraska Secretary of State licence" and mean a Private Detective or Private Detective Agency licence, which says nothing about guard work or guard training. Ask which licence, by name.
- Ask the provider in writing which credential each guard on your site actually holds and which city or county issued it, then verify with that local licensing office.
- Ask for the company’s own evidence instead, since that is what exists here: a current certificate of liability insurance, a written background-check policy, and firearms qualification records for any armed post.
- For an armed post, remember a Nebraska concealed handgun permit is a firearms permit, not a security credential, and does not establish that the person is trained as a guard.
No Nebraska agency licenses or registers individual security guards, so there is no state record to search. The Secretary of State’s Licensing Division administers only the Private Detective Licensing Act (Neb. Rev. Stat. 71-3201 to 71-3213), covering private detectives, detective agencies and plain clothes investigators. Guard regulation, where it exists at all, is municipal. LB 1043 proposed state guard licensing in 2008 and never became law.

Check the company
Nebraska does not license security companies at the state level, so there is no company licence to check. That is a fact about the state, not a mark against any firm.
Nebraska has no state licence for guard companies. The Secretary of State runs ten licensing programmes and guarding is not among them; the closest is the private detective agency licence, whose roster is published but covers investigators rather than guards.
With no licence to check, lean harder on the things that do exist: the guard credentials above, insurance, workers’ compensation, and a business registration in good standing with the Nebraska Secretary of State.
Ask for insurance properly
A licence says the state let them operate. Insurance is what stands between you and a claim, and it is the easier of the two to fake — a certificate is only true on the day it was printed.
tessura does not verify anyone’s insurance and has no access to insurers’ records. This is guidance for doing it yourself, not a statement about any company on this site. It is also not legal advice — for a contract of any size, have your own counsel or broker set the limits.
