Steps to get started

1. Get hired by a PISGS-licensed Ohio security company, the employer files your registration within 7 days.
2. Submit BCI fingerprints (taken within 30 days of filing); the card is issued if you have no disqualifying offense in the last 3 years.
3. Your registration renews annually through the employer.
4. For armed work, add the Firearm Bearer notation with FBI fingerprints and OPOTA-approved firearms training.

Registered Security Guard / Investigator Employee (PISGS ID Card): Every security guard or investigator employee of a Class A/B/C licensee must be registered with Ohio Homeland Security PISGS within 3-7 days of hire (R.C. 4749.06); the employer files the application. No state-mandated training for unarmed registrants; BCI (and FBI if armed) fingerprint check, no disqualifying offense in 3 years; digital ID card. Employees may work pending the card only under a client-signed waiver (PSU 0060). Registration expires annually on its anniversary; no new background check at renewal (Rapback monitored). Service members, veterans and their spouses who attach a military ID or DD 214 are processed ahead of other applications (OAC 4501:7-1-09(C)). The licensee terminates the registration within 10 days after employment ends (OAC 4501:7-1-09(D)). Neither R.C. 4749.06 nor OAC 4501:7-1-09 sets a minimum age. Proprietary (in-house) guards and commissioned peace officers are exempt.

Qualifying Agent (Class A/B/C Provider License): The individual whose experience qualifies a company for a Class A (PI + security), B (PI) or C (security) license. Needs 4,000 working hours of investigatory/security experience in the prior 24 months (reduced to 2,000 with a criminal justice degree, LE, or military-police background; OAC 4501:7-1-06), a passing score on the state exam, BCI/FBI fingerprints, and a digital QA registration card. QAs who carry must add the firearm bearer notation. Renewed biennially with the provider license (2026 cycle deadline March 1).

Working armed in Ohio

Armed guards need a Firearm Bearer (FAB) notation requiring an FBI fingerprint check and completion of OPOTA-approved firearms training with annual requalification.

Firearm Bearer (FAB) Notation: Endorsement on a registered employee's or qualifying agent's ID card allowing them to carry a firearm on duty (R.C. 4749.10). Requires the OPOTC-approved basic firearms program: 20 hours handgun plus 5 hours of training in other firearms if any firearm other than a handgun will be used, or former peace officer equivalency; FBI fingerprint check; employer statement of armed duties. Annual requalification on an OPOTC-certified range/instructor within the preceding 12 months (first due 18 months after basic); certificate must be carried and uploaded. Card lists authorized firearm types (R, A, S). Renewed with the employee registration.
