How to become a security guard in Ohio

Ohio doesn't license individual guards — licensed security companies register each employee with PISGS within 7 days of hire ($25, BCI fingerprint check, annual renewal). Ohio's Rapback system monitors registered guards for new arrests.

Steps to get started

  1. Get hired by a PISGS-licensed Ohio security company — the employer files your registration within 7 days.
  2. Submit BCI fingerprints (taken within 30 days of filing); must be 18+ with a clean record.
  3. Your registration renews annually through the employer.
  4. For armed work, add the Firearm Bearer notation with FBI fingerprints and OPOTA-approved firearms training.

Armed guards need a Firearm Bearer (FAB) notation requiring an FBI fingerprint check and completion of OPOTA-approved firearms training with annual requalification.
