Steps to get started

1. Apply online through the NJSP SORA portal and pay the $75 application fee.
2. Get fingerprinted using the IdentoGo link in your online application.
3. Complete the 24-hour course with a SORA-certified instructor within 30 days of applying, or you must reapply and pay again.
4. Carry your SORA ID card and your company ID card on duty.
5. For armed work, also get a New Jersey Permit to Carry a Handgun through the police chief where you live.
6. Renew every 2 years (every year for armed) after an 8-hour refresher; NJSP emails reminders 90, 60 and 30 days before expiration.

SORA Certification (Security Officer): 18+ (N.J.A.C. 13:55A-3.1). Applies to employees of security officer companies; unarmed proprietary in-house staff, loss prevention employees, unarmed in-house arena/stadium staff where police are present, and federally regulated security employees are exempt (3.2(a)). The 24-hour course and fingerprints must be completed within 30 days of the application or the guard must reapply and pay again (3.4; NJSP SORA FAQ). Guards carry the SORA ID card and the company ID card on duty (6.2). Renewal requires an 8-hour refresher from a SORA-certified instructor before expiration (3.6, 4.2). Active law enforcement officers working security must register but are exempt from the 24-hour course (3.2(d), 3.4(b)).

Certified Security Officer Instructor (SORA Instructor): Only NJSP-certified instructors may teach the 24-hour SORA course or the 8-hour refresher. Must be 25+, and have 20 years combined LE / security-supervisory experience (15 with an associate degree, 10 with a bachelor's), pass fingerprint background and credit review, then complete the 40-hour NJSP Security Officer Instructor Training Course (offered once a year, application window ~Jan 15-Feb 15). Certificate valid 2 years; renewal requires the 8-hour Security Officer Instructor Refresher Course.

Working armed in New Jersey

Armed guards, including armed in-house staff, need an armed SORA certification that renews every year with an 8-hour refresher, plus a separate New Jersey Permit to Carry a Handgun. The SORA certification alone does not authorize carrying a firearm.

Armed SORA Certification: Required for anyone doing armed security work, including armed in-house staff and off-duty or retired police (Detective Melvin Vincent Santiago's Law, P.L.2015, c.295; NJSP Armed Security Officer FAQ). Armed SORA certification does not authorize carrying a firearm: the guard also needs a New Jersey Permit to Carry a Handgun, applied for through the chief of police where they live (or the State Police superintendent if there is no local police department or they live out of state) (N.J.S.A. 2C:58-4). Renews every year with an 8-hour refresher from a SORA-certified instructor (N.J.A.C. 13:55A-3.6, 4.2). Armed officers wear a standardized uniform with the SORA Level 2 badge and use a Level 3 or higher retention holster (6.1). No separate SORA curriculum for armed officers.
