How to become a security guard in Maryland

Maryland certifies security guards through the State Police. Applicants complete 12 hours of initial training approved by the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission — including de-escalation and crisis interaction — before certification.

- Complete 12 hours of MPTSC-approved initial training (criminal law, use of force, de-escalation, crisis interaction).
- Submit Livescan fingerprints for state and FBI checks and apply through the MSP Licensing Division ($15).
- For armed work, hold a Maryland Wear & Carry permit and get employer authorization.
- Renew every 3 years (90 days early) with 8 hours of approved continuing training.
Security Guard Certification: Renewal must be submitted at least 90 days before expiration with proof of continuing training.
Working armed in Maryland
Guards may not carry a handgun on duty without a valid Maryland Wear & Carry permit, employer approval, and notice to the Secretary of State Police.
