Washington DC licenses security officers through the Metropolitan Police Department's Security Officers Management Branch and DLCP. Officers complete 24 hours of pre-assignment training, a 16-hour on-the-job course within 90 working days, and 8 hours of in-service training annually (17 DCMR §2108).

Steps to get started
- Get hired by a licensed DC security agency — applications are submitted through the employer.
- Complete 24 hours of pre-assignment training and pass the required examination.
- Submit fingerprints through MPD for FBI and MPD background checks.
- Complete the 16-hour on-the-job course within 90 working days and 8 hours of in-service training every year.
Security Officer License: Training and background-check costs must be paid in full by the employer and may not be deducted from pay (17 DCMR §2108.5). Confirm the current renewal cycle with DLCP.
Working armed in District of Columbia
Armed work in DC generally requires a Special Police Officer commission with medical clearance, drug testing, firearms training, and twice-yearly requalification — a substantially heavier lift than the base security officer license.
Special Police Officer (SPO) Commission: SPOs have arrest powers on assigned property and face substantially higher training standards (proposed rules raise pre-assignment training to 80 hours). Armed SPOs add firearms training and twice-yearly requalification.
