A company that does not appear here is not necessarily unlicensed. It may be licensed in a state whose regulator publishes no roster, licensed under a different legal name, or licensed since we last read the list. Every result links to the state’s own lookup so you can confirm it at the source.

Alaska licenses guard agencies under AS 18.65.400, but DPS publishes only application forms. It does publish a roster for the sibling process-server program, so the absence of a security list appears deliberate. Verification is by phone to the Permits & Licensing Unit.
The public lookup verifies one licence number at a time and its backing API rejects unauthenticated requests. DPS used to link a published agency-name list, but that file now returns 404. There is no way to list Arizona's licensed agencies from the public tools.

Code Ann. 17-40-309, but the State Police page carries only application and renewal forms — no roster, no lookup, no data file. The state's other licensing search tools do not cover State Police licences. A records request is the only route.

No state company licence. Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, Division of Professions and Occupations regulates individual officers only, so there is no roster of firms to check.
Conn. Gen. Stat. 29-159 requires an annual published list and DESPP links one with 128 security company records. The published file is dated April 2020 and has not been refreshed since, so it shows who was licensed then, not now. Connecticut's open-data licence feed does not carry DESPP credentials.

Ch. 13 but publish no roster or lookup — only application instructions. Delaware's open-data portal carries 79 firms under a 'security guard/private detective' business-tax licence category, but that is a revenue registration, not the police licence.

The board's lookup requires at least two search fields and runs a CAPTCHA, so it verifies one company at a time and cannot be listed. Georgia's own site directs anyone wanting the full roster to a paid, manually processed request form.

The state's licence verification search accepts a blank company name and pages through all 1,027 Security Guard Agency records, 365 of them active, with licence number, status and city. Indiana's official bulk file is sold rather than published.

Iowa holds private security, private investigation and bail enforcement agencies in the same list with no licence-type field, so the three cannot be told apart from the roster alone.

The board's licensing portal returns all 239 security companies in one request with the richest field set of any state — licence number, status, expiry, armed/unarmed level, type of service, full address, phone and website. The hand-maintained directory on the board's own website lists only 92 and should not be used.
Louisiana State Board of Private Security Examiners lookup →The State Police publish a dated 'Active Contract Security Companies' file listing 102 companies. It carries company name and licence number only — no address, status, or dates — so it establishes that a company is licensed and nothing more.
Maine State Police, Special Investigations Unit lookup →MSP publish a single agency listing covering 1,040 security-guard-capable agencies with licence number, type and full address. There is no per-record lookup and no status or expiry column — the list is active-only, so a company disappearing from it is the only signal that its licence ended.
Maryland State Police, Licensing Division, Professional Licensing Unit lookup →The State Police publish an 'Active Watchguards' file listing 244 licensed agencies with business name, address, phone, named licensee, licence number and both effective and expiry dates. The download link carries a new dated address each time the list is refreshed, so it has to be found from the certification unit page rather than remembered.
Massachusetts Department of State Police, Certification Unit lookup →LARA publishes no bulk file, but its licensee search can be walked a name-prefix at a time to reach all 1,490 Security Guard Agency records, 382 of them unexpired. There is no status column, so currency has to be inferred from the expiry date. LARA will email a complete file only on request.
Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Corporations, Securities & Commercial Licensing Bureau lookup →The board's licence-holder app returns all 418 active licensees, 220 of them protective agents, with licence number, type, address, renewal date and the named qualified representative and Minnesota manager. Note the app is third-party hosted rather than on a state domain.
Minnesota Board of Private Detective and Protective Agent Services lookup →No state company licence. Mississippi Department of Public Safety regulates individual officers only, so there is no roster of firms to check.
No state company licence. Missouri city Boards of Police Commissioners (no state regulator) regulates individual officers only, so there is no roster of firms to check.
Montana licenses contract security companies as a distinct type in its licensee lookup, but the search path is blocked to automated requests by the site's firewall. The department says a list can be downloaded by licence type and sells complete lists separately, so a bulk route may exist that we have not confirmed.

The board offers both a per-licence verification tool and a 'list of active licenses by category' report. Both sit behind a bot-defence layer that we could not get past, so we have not confirmed the list's format or whether it carries licence numbers.
Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board lookup →RSA 106-F requires a security guard agency licence and a $50,000 surety bond, renewed every two years, but the State Police publish only the application form. There is no public register of any kind; verification means contacting the Permits and Licensing Unit.
The State Police publish a monthly 'Active Agencies' spreadsheet listing 639 licensed security agencies with licence number, status, address, phone and expiry. The filename carries its date and the visible link on the page can lag the newest file by months, so the current one has to be found by scanning the page rather than followed.

The board publishes its entire licensed roster on one page, each entry giving the responsible provider's name, a provider number and an agency number, the company name, any trading name and the street address. The board warns the page is updated only periodically.

DPSST runs two systems and only one shows a licence number. The entity licence search returns name, DPSST identification number and status, and can be walked by name prefix. The older flat agency list is fully enumerable and richer — 1,197 active entries with address, phone and county — but has no licence number column and mixes in-house employers such as bars and clinics with contract security firms, so the entity search is the source to use.
Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) lookup →No state company licence. Pennsylvania Courts of Common Pleas (county clerk of courts) regulates individual officers only, so there is no roster of firms to check.
The Attorney General licenses private security guard businesses and states it holds 90 active licences, but publishes no register, search tool or list. All inquiries go to a mailbox, and a public records request is the only route.
SLED licenses contract security businesses under Title 40 Chapter 18, but its security companies page carries only application forms, bond forms and an ineligibility list of barred individuals. There is no verification search, roster or licence lookup of any kind.

The department's verification portal returns all 4,641 security company records — 2,200 of them active — with licence number, sub-type, status, expiry, city and county. It carries closed and revoked records too, so a buyer can see a company's licence history rather than just its current state.
Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, Private Protective Services lookup →The public licensee search is CAPTCHA-gated and there is no DPS licensee dataset. A separate endpoint behind the portal will resolve one licence number at a time to a company name and sub-type without a CAPTCHA, so the roster is reachable in principle but only by walking the number space slowly. Texas is also the one state besides California that says it publishes per-company insurance information, though only on the gated detail page.

Utah does sell a complete roster of its 331 contract security companies through the state's data request service, with scheduled repeat delivery by email, and the record count itself can be checked for free to detect churn.
Utah Department of Commerce, Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) lookup →Vermont publishes a full profession roster download, and we successfully triggered one for security services agencies. The download link is minted inside a live session and cannot be fetched directly, so it needs a browser walking the steps. Vermont is a small market — roughly 45 agency licences across the two relevant types.
Vermont Office of Professional Regulation, Secretary of State lookup →Virginia replaced its old licence lookup in December 2024 and the current tool does substring matching on business name, returning licence number, DCJS identifier, status and both issue and expiry dates. Our two independent probes disagreed on whether it can be swept for the whole register, so the coverage we can reach is unsettled.
Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Division of Licensure and Regulatory Services lookup →The licence lookup validates a CAPTCHA on the server before any search runs, so it cannot be listed — its county and status filters would otherwise make it ideal. Washington's open data carries only county-level licence counts, no company names, and state law restricts releasing licensee lists for commercial purposes.
Washington State Department of Licensing, Private Security Guard Program lookup →West Virginia licenses the firm through a qualifying individual, and the public search returns only those individuals — 475 security guard records, 105 of them active. Each row names the firm in its address, so the licensed firms can be derived, but no firm licence number is published and none can be matched against a company's claim.
West Virginia Secretary of State, Business and Licensing Division lookup →Wisconsin licenses guard firms and detective agencies under one credential type. The licence search can return all 892 agency records in a single response — 493 active — with licence number, city, issue date and status, though one of our two probes was blocked outright, so the path may not be dependable.
Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) lookup →No state company licence. Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation regulates individual officers only, so there is no roster of firms to check.
