Alabama licenses individual security officers who work for contract security companies through the Alabama Security Regulatory Board; in-house guards are exempt. Officers apply within 30 days of starting work, after 8 hours of board-approved training; armed officers need additional firearms training and must be at least 21. The entry-level credential is the Security Officer License, with 8 hours of state-required training. Confirm current rules with the Alabama Security Regulatory Board (ASRB). The Alabama licensing guide has every credential, fee and renewal window.
Armed officers must be at least 21, complete 4 additional hours of board-approved armed training, qualify with an approved firearms course, and hold a pistol permit from the sheriff of their home county (Ala. Code 34-27C-11). Renewal adds 2 extra hours of armed refresher training and a current course of fire.
