Here is every fee the state charges for Florida's two security officer licenses, taken from the FDACS fee schedules and Rule 5N-1.116 of the Florida Administrative Code.
Class D security officer license: first time
- License fee: $45
- Fingerprint processing fee: $42
- Fingerprint retention fee: $10.75
- Application fee: none for a Class D
- Total paid to the state: $97.75
The $42 processing fee is what FDACS charges at its regional offices and for paper fingerprint cards. FDACS notes that sheriff's offices charge approximately $35 and private livescan vendors set their own prices, so your actual fingerprint cost depends on where you go.
Class G statewide firearm license: first time
- License fee: $112, paid with the application
- Fingerprint processing fee: $42
- Fingerprint retention fee: $10.75
- Total: $164.75
- Temporary Class G request: add a $15 processing fee, for $179.75
If you apply for the Class D and Class G at the same time, the application instructions say to submit one set of fingerprints and a single processing and retention fee, so the state fees for both come to $209.75. If you submitted fingerprints for a Chapter 493 license within the past 6 months and still hold a valid license, you do not pay for fingerprints again.
Renewals, every two years
- Class D: $45 renewal fee plus $16.75 fingerprint retention, $61.75 total
- Class G: $112 renewal fee plus $16.75 fingerprint retention, $128.75 total
Paying online adds a 2.5% card convenience fee or a $0.50 e-check fee. Chapter 493 says an applicant who holds multiple licenses pays only a single fingerprint retention fee, so if you hold both a Class D and a Class G, check your renewal notice for the exact amount due.
Late and replacement fees
- Renewed within 3 months after expiration: a late fee equal to the license fee, so $45 more for a Class D and $112 more for a Class G
- 3 months or more after expiration: no renewal; you apply again and pay initial fees
- Replacement or revised license: $15
Training costs
The 40-hour Class D course and the 28-hour Class G course are paid to private licensed schools and instructors, not the state, and prices vary by school. The Class G annual 4-hour requalification is also taught by a private Class K instructor. Ask each school for its full price, including any range, ammunition, or certificate charges, before you enroll.
Veterans and military fee waivers
Two separate rules apply, and they are easy to confuse.
Renewal fees. F.S. 493.6113(7) requires FDACS to waive renewal fees for active duty service members and their spouses, members who served on active duty within the 2 years before the license expires (with an honorable discharge if separated), and surviving spouses of members who died on active duty within those 2 years.
First-time fees. F.S. 493.6107(6) waives the initial application fee for veterans and certain spouses, but the classes it lists do not include Class D or Class G, and those two licenses have no application fee anyway. However, the current FDACS Class D application form and new license fee schedule state that the initial license fee is waived for a veteran who applies within 24 months after discharge, with a copy of the DD 214. Because these sources do not match, confirm with the Division of Licensing at (850) 245-5691 before you apply.
